The UK Accounting Job Market
London is one of the world's major financial centers and for that reason it offers many finance and accounting job opportunities to accountants with strong business and financial skills and abilities. There are many job opportunities for both part and fully qualified CA’s and CPA’s. The job market is currently very busy as the UK has seen it’s economy steadily strengthening over the past 4-5 years.
Accountants Working on Contract
Most NZ and Australian accountants initially begin their UK employment in a contract accounting position for a period of 2 weeks to 6 months. Your first contract usually pays a little less than a UK experienced accountant, but once you have UK accounting work experience on your CV you will be paid on a par with your experience. If you want permanent employment, there are also plenty of opportunities. It may be best to initially contract while you settle into a new country.
UK Accounting Pay Rates & Hours
The more finance and accounting experience you have and the more skills you possess will normally lead to a higher rate of pay. Contract accountants in the UK are normally paid by the hour and can expect to earn £14 - £35 per hour. Some employers pay day rates, in which case they will normally assume 7.5 to 9 hours work per day but it may be best to clarify this with your agent when negotiating each accounting position. Most UK public sector organisations work a 37.5 hour week while commercial organisations generally work a standard 40 hour week, after which, you may be required to work additional hours.
Your Accounting Career in the UK
UK accounting agencies will usually promote your services to organisations that best suit your previous finance and accounting work experience. If you want to shift your career path to a new and different area of accountancy, you will need to inform your agent early. Changing your career path can be difficult and it may be best to initially accept a position in your field of expertise, while investigating new career options.
