Working on Contract
While there are lots of permanent positions around, most Aussie and Kiwi professionals prefer to start with a contract position as this allows greater flexibility in the early stages of a working holiday. Most contract placements are between 3 – 6 months. Your first contract is usually the most difficult to obtain but once you have UK work experience on your CV, finding work will usually become easier. If you want longer term work or are hoping to be sponsored, then you need to work hard and convince your employer that you can't be done without.
UK Pay Rates & Hours
Hourly rates typically range from £15 - £25 per hour. The more experience you have and the more skills you possess will normally lead to a higher rate of pay.
Graduates with 1-2 years experience can expect to earn £15-18 per hour. Graduates with 5 years plus experience can expect to earn £18-£25 and in some cases maybe up to £30 per hour. Skilled trades pay around £10 -16 per hour.
Your Career in the UK
UK
recruitment agencies will usually promote your services to organisations that best suit your previous work experience. If you want to make a shift in your career to a different area you will need to tell your agent. Your first UK job is often the most difficult to get and it is therefore advisable to consider beginning in your area of expertise to gain UK experience and to be earning an income in those early stages of your working holiday. Once you have that vital UK experience on your CV you will be able to look at a wider range of jobs.
